Grounding

“ a beautiful, calming reminder of connection and community ”

Grounding emerges from an observation of place, particularly through the lens of aerial imagery that reveals the intricate networks of human and animal movement across the Mulangarri and Gungaderra Grassland Reserves.

From above, fine threads of paths weave through the landscape, showing delicate yet enduring traces of presence, rhythm, and relationship with the land. Inspired by these subtle imprints and working with the Gungahlin Community, Grounding begins with people walking on a circle of clay to transform the surface in a communal act of walking, pressing, and connecting.

Hand cut tiles, shaped from the clay circle with unique prints made by the community, are fired into permanence to preserve the impressions left behind.

In early 2026, the tiles will be installed as a lasting marker of the Gungahlin community and a tribute to the natural rhythms and shared spaces that define our collective experience at the Gunghalin Community Centre.

Commissioned by Belconnen Arts for the Gungahlin Community Centre.

This project is proudly supported through a partnership between Belco Arts & Gungahlin Arts, Monarch Building Solutions, and Infrastructure Canberra (ICBR).

Thanks to the Gungahlin Community and everyone involved.
